On April 11, in Huang Di’s hometown of Xinzheng City, Zhengzhou, Henan province, the Memorial Ceremony to Ancestor Huang Di was solemnly observed, as it is every year on the third day of the third month in the Chinese lunar calendar. This year holds particular significance as it falls within the Jiachen Year (2024).

Under the theme “Peace, Concord, and Harmony with One Same Root, Ancestor, and Origin,” the ceremony was co-sponsored by several esteemed organizations, including the People’s Government of Henan Province, the The Henan Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the Taiwan Affairs Office under the State Council, the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, the All-China Federation of Compatriots from Taiwan, and the Association for Yan Huang Culture of China.

People of Chinese descent from all corners of the globe gathered to honor the legendary ancestor Huang Di, known as the Yellow Emperor, beseeching for the continued prosperity of Chinese civilization and extending wishes for global peace and harmony.

Commencing at 9:40 a.m. with a ceremonial gun salute, the event unfolded with various rituals including the offering of flower baskets, burning of incense, solemn bowing, recitation of prayers, choral performances, traditional song and dance, prayers for the nation, and prayers for the harmonious coexistence of humanity and nature.

At 10:40 a.m., the ceremony drew to a close, witnessed by approximately 5,000 attendees, among whom were representatives from diverse sectors and journalists from nearly 100 media outlets.

This grand commemoration serves not only as a cultural tradition but also as a platform for fostering collaborative endeavors aimed at mutual development. This year, alongside the ceremony, a business negotiation and investment promotion event took place, resulting in the signing of several project agreements.

Worship of the Yellow Emperor has been a cherished tradition in China since ancient times, dating back to the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period (770-221 BC). In recognition of its cultural significance, the Memorial Ceremony was inscribed onto China’s national list of intangible cultural heritage in 2008.

Annually, Chinese communities worldwide, including those in Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, as well as those residing in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, observe various activities to honor and pay homage to this revered ancestor.
