Ozen Reserve Bolifushi in the Maldives was recently recertified by Green Globe. Initially certified in 2015, the private island has shown continuous improvement in sustainability practices, now boasting an impressive compliance score of 87%.

Monica Coppetta, General Manager at the resort said, “We are thrilled to announce the successful Green Globe recertification of Ozen Reserve Bolifushi, where luxury seamlessly merges with environmental responsibility. Our initiatives including waste heat recovery, in-house water bottling, a thriving kitchen garden, biodegradable laundry detergents, and water conservation efforts reflect our dedication to minimizing our carbon footprint and preserving the pristine beauty of the Maldives.”

Known for its stunning white sand beaches, vibrant turquoise waters teeming with tropical fish, and lush green forests, Ozen Reserve Bolifushi in the Maldives adheres to a comprehensive sustainability management plan that will continue evolving in the years ahead.

Waste Heat Recovery

Despite the remote location of the resort, energy conservation remains a priority. Ozen Reserve Bolifushi creatively addresses this challenge by harnessing waste heat from electric generators to provide hot water for villas, staff quarters, and operational needs. This innovative approach significantly reduces the resort’s carbon footprint by approximately 275 tons of CO2 emissions.

In-House Water Bottling Plant

Self-reliance extends to water management on the island. Through a reverse osmosis process, Ozen Reserve Bolifushi produces its own potable water onsite, served in reusable glass bottles, eliminating the need for plastic bottles and saving around 80,000 bottles annually. This initiative not only reduces carbon emissions but also avoids the transportation of imported bottled water.

A Flourishing Kitchen Garden

As part of its sustainability efforts, Ozen Reserve Bolifushi cultivates a variety of vegetables, fruits, and herbs onsite for use in culinary creations. All produce is grown using sustainable, organic methods, minimizing environmental impact and ensuring freshness from garden to plate.

Resident Marine Biologist

To safeguard marine ecosystems, the resort employs a resident marine biologist who oversees the coral reef at Bolifushi island. Through initiatives like underwater coral gardening, the biologist fosters coral regeneration and educates guests on local marine life conservation during snorkeling tours.

Minimizing Environmental Footprint

In alignment with its commitment to sustainability, Ozen Reserve Bolifushi utilizes eco-friendly products, including biodegradable laundry detergents from Diversey Limited. These chemicals break down harmlessly, minimizing impact on the surrounding environment while maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards.

Water Reclamation

Recognizing the importance of water conservation in the face of climate change, the resort implements water reclamation practices. A sewage treatment plant efficiently converts wastewater into nutrient-rich irrigation water for the island’s gardens, reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers and ensuring sustainable water use for future generations.
