NAV CANADA and CAE announced a groundbreaking partnership to enhance the training of essential air traffic services personnel. This innovative alliance marks the first in Canada where CAE educators will conduct the foundational training for Flight Service Specialists and Air Traffic Controllers using the training materials and curricula provided by NAV CANADA. The inaugural sessions are set to commence in the autumn of 2024 at the newly constructed Air Traffic Services Training Centre located on the CAE campus in Montreal.

This collaboration draws on the strengths of two leading Canadian firms to forge advancements in air traffic management solutions. CAE, recognized as the largest aviation training provider globally, is ideally equipped to collaborate with NAV CANADA, the world’s second-largest Air Navigation Service Provider, in cultivating a skilled workforce to enhance the safety and effectiveness of the aviation traffic network. This partnership will expand training capabilities as NAV CANADA continues to manage its established training operations throughout its various facilities nationwide.

This strategic alliance will create numerous new career paths at both entities. NAV CANADA aims to augment its team of air traffic services professionals by adding over 500 trainees by 2028, who will receive their training courtesy of CAE. CAE is actively hiring personnel for its training center to ensure the delivery of training that not only meets Transport Canada’s criteria but also adheres to CAE’s stringent training standards.

“With this partnership, and through the overall modernization of our training programs, NAV CANADA will deliver long-term benefits to Canada by preparing for continued growth in demand for air travel, building resilience to respond to emerging customer needs and supporting the fluidity of the country’s supply chains while accelerating access to high-paying jobs that support the Canadian economy,” said Raymond G. Bohn, President and CEO, NAV CANADA.

“With CAE’s extensive background in advanced training delivery and modern learning sciences, our partnership with NAV CANADA is a natural extension of our business and core mission to make the world a safer place,” said Marc Parent, CAE’s President and CEO. “Moreover, as the leading provider of civil aviation training worldwide, CAE understands the importance of effective workforce development and the challenges posed by the increased demand for highly skilled people throughout the aviation sector.”

As NAV CANADA engages CAE to bolster its training capacity, its existing Flight Information Regions (FIR) schools remain fully operational, maintaining a complete offering of specializations and on-the-job training. All trainees qualifying at CAE will adhere to the identical curricula, uphold the same standards, and undergo equivalent threshold assessments as those trained at NAV CANADA facilities.

CAE is set to undertake the preliminary training for air traffic controllers and flight service specialists at its new facility in Montreal. This partnership is expected to significantly enhance NAV CANADA’s training provision, supporting the education of more than 500 additional students by 2028.
