The Collins College of Hospitality Management at Cal Poly Pomona paid tribute to the Marriott family during its prestigious gala fundraiser, Hospitality Uncorked 2024, held on Saturday, March 9, 2024. This event highlighted Marriott’s significant global impact on the industry and expressed gratitude for their generous contributions to the college’s philanthropic endeavors. With a record-breaking attendance, the gala provided an opportunity for guests to come together for an evening filled with celebration, networking, and fundraising efforts aimed at supporting scholarships, professional development, and various programs at California’s largest hospitality school.

Held at the esteemed J.W. Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Marriott International’s flagship location on the West Coast, the event boasted a touch of celebrity as third- and fourth-generation members of the Marriott family were honored with the prestigious 2024 Robert Mondavi Wine and Food Award. Among the recipients were Deborah Marriott Harrison, Marriott International’s Global Cultural Ambassador Emeritus, alongside her sons Christopher Harrison, managing partner at Dauntless Capital Partners, and Matthew Harrison, general manager of the Inn at the Mission San Juan Capistrano, which is part of the Autograph Collection.

Nearly 800 guests, representing a diverse array of industry professionals, culinary enthusiasts, educators, and elected officials, including representatives from Los Angeles County, came together for an evening of live entertainment, culinary delights, and heartfelt applause, making it a memorable affair for all involved.

“We are so grateful to our industry partners, alumni, and friends. This spectacular event is created and driven by the SUPER volunteer power of the Collins College Board of Advisors,” said Margie Ferree Jones, Dean, and James A. Collins Distinguished Chair at Cal Poly Pomona’s Collins College of Hospitality Management. “Hospitality Uncorked is a beacon on how teamwork and shared purpose can help students who dream of success achieve it.”

Previous recipients of the Mondavi Award include Julia Child, the celebrated cookbook author and television personality; Alan Fuerstman, the Founder and CEO of Montage Hotels & Resorts; Robert (Bob) Olson, the Founder & CEO of R.D. Olson Development; and Caroline Beteta, the President & CEO of Visit California.

Marriott, a longstanding supporter of The Collins College of Hospitality Management, has played a pivotal role in various academic programs and operational advancements within the college. Actively involved in student recruitment and alumni engagement, Marriott also generously contributes financially to bolster student services. Furthermore, its executives offer invaluable industry insights and guidance by serving on the college’s Board of Advisors. In 2010, the Marriott Foundation made a significant donation towards expanding the college’s academic facilities, matched by funds from Carol and James A. Collins. Together, these contributions facilitated the construction of the Marriott Learning Center, featuring cutting-edge classrooms, a student lounge, study areas, and faculty offices.

Hospitality Uncorked is orchestrated by The Collins College of Hospitality Management’s Board of Advisors, comprising Michele Gendreau, Chair of Hospitality Uncorked and Executive at Disneyland Resort; Bridget Bilinski, Chair of the Collins College Board of Advisors and Retired Marriott Executive; Pam Jones, Chair of the Board of Advisors’ Student Success Committee and Retired Marriott Executive; and Javier Cano, Marriott Area General Manager for Los Angeles.
