The IGLTA Foundation, the charitable branch of the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association, has unveiled results from its recent survey titled “State Policy Impact on LGBTQ+ Tourism.” This study delves into how Florida’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws have affected tourism, incorporating feedback from member businesses and destinations within Florida associated with IGLTA.

The analysis, while centered on Florida, offers insights relevant to any locale facing government actions that might adversely affect LGBTQ+ tourism. The recent discriminatory laws in Florida highlight the ongoing need for global LGBTQ+ acceptance and illustrate the deterrent effect of such policies on LGBTQ+ visitors.

Key Findings:

A significant 80% of LGBTQ+ respondents from the U.S. view Florida as unwelcoming to some extent.

The repercussions on business-related and conference travel to Florida are notable. Nearly half—49% of international respondents and 52% of those from the U.S.—express reluctance or outright avoidance of scheduling business trips or meetings in the state due to these legislative actions.

Nevertheless, a resilient two-thirds of LGBTQ+ respondents in the U.S. and 59% internationally are open to visiting LGBTQ+-friendly cities in states that enact anti-LGBTQ+ laws, signaling strong community resilience and a commitment to supportive destinations.

“We are committed to delivering essential research to help businesses navigate the continuous evolution of LGBTQ+ tourism,” said John Tanzella (he/him), IGLTA President/CEO. “While this report arose from the negative legislative actions in Florida, the takeaways are applicable globally, to any destination facing governmental challenges that impact its ability to attract LGBTQ+ travelers. It also highlights the ways that inclusive destinations – like our engaged members and partners throughout Florida – can overcome the vitriol with authentic support.”

These results emphasize that safety and a sincere dedication to LGBTQ+ rights are crucial for LGBTQ+ travelers. They prefer locations that are openly welcoming and steer clear of places with discriminatory laws. Superficial support is ineffective; what counts for travelers is active and authentic advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, especially concerning transgender individuals.
