The Tanzania Government has launched an advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven travel portal called the Tanzania Travel Companion, which is aimed at helping the country benefit from the rising demand in the tourism sector. This was announced by Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Dr. Ashatu Kijaji while addressing the National Assembly regarding the ministry’s 2026/2027 budget estimates. The platform is a key element of the Digital Destination Marketing and Communication Centre (DDMCC) project initiated by the government to boost the competitiveness of the travel industry.
In addition, the new digital travel companion can provide information in more than 56 languages worldwide. Travel technology solutions such as AI chatbots and multilingual guidance are expected to make the travel experience more convenient for tourists and promote better travel planning and bookings prior to and during the stay.

The Tanzania Travel Companion enables tourists to plan and organise trips efficiently by offering comprehensive information about attractions, accommodation, transport and tourism services before and during their visit. Integrated digital maps and instant AI responses make it easier for travellers to navigate local services, discover hidden gems, and make seamless bookings — factors that significantly influence tourist satisfaction and length of stay.
Technology now plays an essential role in how travellers research, plan and book trips globally. Destinations that successfully implement travel technology platforms — including AI, mobile applications and integrated booking systems — are statistically more likely to attract repeat visitors, improve conversion rates and boost overall market share.

Officials also expect the platform to reduce operational costs and improve efficiency by integrating with systems that handle entrance fees, hotel reservations, transport services and protected area access, strengthening revenue collection and service delivery for both government and private sector stakeholders.
The launch of this digital tool comes at a strategic moment for Tanzania’s tourism industry, which is preparing to **co‑host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 along with Kenya and Uganda. AFCON — Africa’s biggest football tournament — is expected to draw millions of football fans, officials and global media attention, providing a rare opportunity to showcase Tanzania’s tourism attractions to a global audience.
The country’s tourism sector has recorded consistent growth, with tourist arrivals rising to approximately 5.94 million in 2025, marking a 10.7 % increase year‑on‑year, and tourism earnings growing from US$3.9 billion to US$4.4 billion over the same period. The sector has also been ranked among the top global markets in terms of growth compared with pre‑pandemic levels, contributing significantly to foreign exchange earnings and employment.
These figures underscore a robust demand trend and signal strong growth opportunities for Tanzania’s tourism ecosystem, particularly ahead of AFCON 2027, when global visibility and visitor interest are expected to peak.
The introduction of AI‑driven travel services not only improves logistics and convenience but also creates broader opportunities for Tanzania’s travel tech sector. As digital transformation becomes crucial in global tourism competition, tech‑enabled services such as AI chatbots, mobile travel apps and integrated platforms empower local businesses to participate more effectively in international markets.
Digital tools enhance information accessibility, allow personalised travel planning, and build stronger digital profiles for destinations, enabling Tanzanian tourism operators to tap into new markets and customer segments who increasingly expect online pre‑travel services and real‑time assistance.
These platforms can also attract tech partnerships, encourage innovation within local hospitality businesses, and pave the way for startups focused on digital booking, itinerary planning and smart travel services — creating new commercial opportunities and jobs within the tourism value chain.
Tanzania’s government has been positioning tourism as a core pillar of the national economy, with long‑term targets that include attracting eight million visitors by 2030, expanding infrastructure, and developing new attractions across national parks, cultural sites and coastal destinations. By leveraging high‑profile events such as AFCON 2027, the country aims to increase international arrivals, stimulate investment, and enhance service quality across accommodation, transport and event facilities.
Officials have stressed that digital innovation will play a central role in the marketing strategy around AFCON, including on‑site promotions, digital campaigns and enhanced online services, enabling Tanzania to capitalise on the influx of visitors and convert sporting interest into tourism demand.
Alongside the travel chatbot, the ministry also introduced the Problem Animals Information System (PAIS) — a digital platform that streamlines wildlife conflict reporting and compensation management. This has cut processing times for claims from as long as 12 months to just 14 days, improving transparency, accountability, and community trust in wildlife management systems.
PAIS strengthens Tanzania’s reputation for effective protected area governance, supporting sustainable tourism development and encouraging broader participation from conservation‑minded travellers. Investors and community stakeholders see value in such systems because they enhance both social and environmental components of travel services — key factors in long‑term growth and destination competitiveness.
In addition to its digital tourism strategy, Tanzania is investing in infrastructure that will enhance its capacity to host more tourists. This includes upgrading airports, road transport networks, accommodation facilities, and eco-tourism destinations. These initiatives are expected to help the country continue to experience tourism growth long after AFCON 2027, since it will be able to cater to an ever-growing number of international tourists.
Through these two strategies, the country will have two engines of growth in its tourism sector – one based on digital technology and connectivity, while the other is based on improved infrastructure and hosting global events. Through this, Tanzania will become a more attractive and competitive destination for tourists who seek innovative and exciting experiences. Through this, Tanzania will be able to maximize the benefits from its innovative approach to travel, becoming a tourism innovation leader in East Africa.
