The Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau (TCVB) recently became a member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), underscoring its commitment to responsible tourism. As Tokyo’s principal destination marketing organization, TCVB focuses on enhancing the city’s economic growth and community welfare through its tourism initiatives. The bureau plays a pivotal role in showcasing Tokyo’s dynamic appeal to international visitors and business gatherings, with the objective of boosting tourism and event hosting.
Under the banner of transforming Tokyo into a premier global destination, TCVB is dedicated to advancing sustainability through tourism and business events. The city’s appeal draws international tourists, while its local populace and diverse industries thrive within. Tokyo’s residents are keen to preserve their distinctive cultural and environmental landscape. In pursuit of sustainable tourism, TCVB aims to diligently reduce tourism’s adverse environmental and social effects while promoting the industry’s growth.
TCVB has initiated the “TCVB Sustainable Tourism Partnership,” collaborating with various partners to foster concerted planning and actionable efforts. This partnership concentrates on five strategic areas:
Moreover, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is striving towards achieving zero emissions by 2050. As the representative destination organization of Tokyo, TCVB is committed to working alongside industry stakeholders to realize these environmental goals. They also support local communities and industries in crafting sustainable visitor experiences, enhancing Tokyo’s overall sustainability profile.
Tokyo’s geographical diversity, from its bustling urban centers to its quieter suburbs and remote islands, provides unique opportunities for local partnerships. Each contributing partner aims to positively impact their communities and local economies, with expectations for more members to join these efforts in the future.
Masaru Suzuki, Director General of Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau says, “It is our great honor to become a member of the GSTC. The goal of our activities is to make ‘sustainable tourism’ visible and to revitalize the tourism industry using it as a norm.
To promote ‘sustainable tourism’ in a vast city like Tokyo, it is essential for DMOs, the government, tourism-related businesses, and local communities to work together in consensus. TCVB, the only DMO that covers all regions in Tokyo, our strength lies in the fact that we have industrial partners as supporting members and are able to promote various initiatives also in cooperation with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. We are very much looking forward to learning from other GSTC members who are working hard towards the same goals around the world, exchanging ideas and bringing our wisdom together to develop initiatives. Finally, we hope that joining the GSTC could be a great opportunity to further solidify our mission ‘Making TOKYO the world’s choice’.”
“We warmly welcome the Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau as a new member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. TCVB’s commitment to sustainability reflects its deep respect for its cultural heritage and its dedication to preserving the natural environment, fostering community well-being, and promoting responsible tourism practices that ensure the longevity and prosperity of the region,” says Randy Durband, CEO of GSTC.
