The anticipated completion of repair works on the historic Clitheroe Castle, a key tourist landmark, is set within the coming weeks, signaling a significant milestone in preserving the site’s 800-year legacy. This development, coupled with planned enhancements to the adjacent Castle Street, emerged as a focal point during a recent Ribble Valley full council meeting, spotlighting the local government’s commitment to cultural heritage and community improvement.

Labor Councillor Lee Jameson, representing a coalition including the Greens and Progressive Liberals, sought assurances from the council leadership regarding the timeline for these crucial projects, highlighting the community’s investment and expectations for timely completion.

In response, Borough Conservative Leader Councillor Stephen Atkinson outlined the progress made, noting that Lancashire County Council had completed essential surveys on Castle Street to guide the design process. With designs nearing finalization, a collaborative approach between the county and Ribble Valley Council is envisioned to finalize the project timeline, ensuring minimal disruption to local events such as the upcoming food festival.

Atkinson confirmed that the castle keep, an emblem of historical significance and a draw for visitors, is expected to reopen to the public shortly, with both the ramparts and interior accessible. The reopening is contingent on a comprehensive 3-D survey and stabilization efforts to ensure visitor safety. Further, a detailed examination will determine the extent of necessary structural and restoration work, with activities likely commencing during warmer weather to accommodate specific material requirements.

While initial funding has been allocated for the castle and its surroundings, additional resources may be sought through Heritage Lottery funding to fulfill the project’s scope, potentially extending timelines. This transparency in planning and potential funding avenues underscores a proactive approach to heritage conservation.

Moreover, the borough council’s recent budget has allocated substantial funds for further improvements to Clitheroe Castle’s grounds, reinforcing the site’s role in enriching the local tourism landscape and providing an enhanced visitor experience. This concerted effort to preserve and promote Clitheroe Castle not only honors its historical importance but also positions it as a central figure in the region’s cultural and tourism strategy.
